Description

(DISNEY, WALT) IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL DRAWINGS FOR THE ANIMATED FEATURE ICHABOD AND MISTER TOAD" in 2 vols: 1) Vol. I is a collection of storyboard sketches illustrated with 100 mostly 5" x 4" drawings in color and black & white, executed in crayon, watercolor, chalk, and possibly other mediums. All unsigned. Some stapled to cards. All appear to be removable. 2) Vol. II contains 23 10" x 13" dull-finished photographs marked with a white letter "T" and a two-digit number. Photos are explained in white writing on the black pages opposite. Both vols. spiral bound. Covers decorated in color with Ichabod Crane-related art. Covers starting to loosen. Black scrapbook pages show wear & tear. Some pages loose. Oblong folio bindings in poor condition. Clear plastic covers warped and in poor condition. "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" has two segments, both based on popular works of literature: The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. In Irving's story, lowly schoolmaster Ichabod Crane falls for Katrina, the beautiful daughter of the town's wealthiest farmer. Katrina's relationship with Ichabod angers Brom, the town brute, and at a Halloween party Brom tries to frighten the superstitious Ichabond with the tale of the Headless Horseman. In the an unusually dark ending for a Disney movie, Ichabod encounters the Headless Horseman on his way home that night and is never seen from again.
Because of the high cost of film and the limited resources of his studio, the majority of films Disney produced during and just after WWII were package films, like "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad", that combined two or more short films. The story of the Ichabod Crane was later separated from the companion Mr. Toad film and was sold and screened alone as "The Legend of Sleep Hollow".
The animated film "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad," starring Bing Crosby, opened in 1949 and was one of the most popular of Disney's short films. These two volumes were given to "Mrs. Runyon" by Walt Disney. Vol. 1 contains a glued-on sheet of paper with a signed Walt Disney presentation inscription to Mrs. Runyon for her help on the on movie.
