Description

PAIR OF RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TEETH First Half of the 19th Century
One tooth depicts a three-masted pirate ship under full sail flying a Jolly Roger flag at the top of its central mast. Another ship is seen in the far distance. The other tooth depicts a battle scene between two ships, one of which is flying the Union Jack and firing cannons. Seven men are depicted diving or being blown off the deck of the other ship, which is flying an unidentified red and white striped flag and is believed to be the pirate ship depicted on the other tooth. Both ships depicted with several holes in the sails. Extensive and meticulous polychrome work executed in black, brown, red and blue. The workmanship exhibited in the pair is of the highest caliber, with significant artistry and extensive details, particularly to the choppy water, billowing cannon smoke and ship rigging. Of note, this is the first scrimshawed depiction of a pirate ship Eldred's has seen.
Provenance: An Australian collection.
