Attributed to Elijah Taylor Baker (American, 1827-1890). Portrait of the brigantine Emma Dean under full sail with coast in distance. Ship with black hull and red bottom, and flying an American flag and pennants. Unsigned. Notation verso indicates the ship was built by William Webb in 1860 and calls Webb one of the most successful ship builders of the 19th Century. Oil on canvas, 22 x 34".
Provenance: Oliphant and Company, New York.
Private Collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.


Frame rubbing to edges of canvas and two small areas of inpainting to water beneath ship. Small areas of scattered craquelure. Frame is not original and its dimensions are 29.5 x 41.75 in.
