Description

ANDREW CLEMENS SAND ART BOTTLE Iowa, Circa 1886
Multicolored sand arranged in a clear glass wax-sealed apothecary bottle. Striated borders spanning the full circumference frame a central image on both sides. Obverse with floral design and gift inscription Mr. & Mrs. Rev. John Thompson From G.T. Seal Xmas 1886". Reverse depicts an American eagle clutching an American flag within an oval medallion. Retains remnants of the artist's original paper label applied to underside of bottle. Height 6.75".
Provenance: Jacques Noel Jacobsen auction, Staten Island, New York, February 22, 1966, Lot #266. Accompanied by copy of original sales receipt.

The bottle and its contents appear to be in excellent, untouched condition with its original seal, in our opinion. Overall height 7. Diameter of bottom 2 1/8". Diameter of top of stopper 1 3/8"."
