Description

POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH BY THE BRITANNIA ENGRAVER First Half of the 19th Century
Titled Daniel, the, fourth, London, Elizabeth." along one side, indentifying the whaleship as the Daniel of London. Obverse depicts a polychrome whaling scene of the Daniel and five whaleboats in the water actively chasing six visible whales, including one waifed. Whales and ships with deep incised carving. Red sealing wax at pennants, flag and whale spouts. Reverse depicts the Daniel on fire and the Elizabeth off the bow. Red sealing wax at flames. Foliate vine encircles tip and a geometric band encircles base. Length 7.5".
