Description

SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH BY W.L. RODERICK Mid-19th Century
Titled In Shore Whaling The Death" along bottom edge. Depicts a finely detailed whaling scene with a whaleship, four whaleboats and a distant island. A sperm whale with stoved whaleboat at left. A sperm whale flanked by two whaleboats, one of which is throwing a killing lance, at right. Whaleboat off the ship's bow is chasing a pod of four sperm whales. Inscribed at tip "The Tooth of a Sperm Whale Captured March 30th 1855". Scene signed lower right "W.L. Roderick". Length 8.25".
Work of this quality, especially signed examples, rarely comes to market and is highly collectible.
