Description

PAIR OF POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TEETH First Half of the 19th Century
One tooth signed Campbell" depicts an image from the title page of The Naval Monument published by A. Bowen in 1816. At left, Liberty stands upon a shell drawn by two horses and holds a flag mounted to a trident. At right is a "Washington Independence" monument with numerous American flags and twelve oval vignettes depicting naval war heroes including Hull, Jones, Decatur, Bainbridge and Perry. At lower edge of image are anchors, crossed cannons, cannonballs and a banner inscribed "We Have Met The Enemy And They Are Ours". Other tooth depicts a naval encounter between the Constitution and Guerriere on one side and the Enterprize and Boxer on the other side. Lengths 7".
