Description

LARGE POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH First Half of the 19th Century
Obverse depicts the burning of the USS Philadelphia in Tripoli Harbor in 1804 as a crowd looks on from shore. Billowing smoke fills the sky and boats laden with men row away from the ship. Scene framed by a fort and hilly shoreline at left and a rocky outcropping at right. The reverse depicts a warship off the coast in heavy seas. Additional ships in the distance including one that appears to be dismasted and flying an American flag. Both scenes with incredible detail. A floral vine border along the bottom edge separates the two scenes. Excellent patina. Length 8.
Note: Figure 67 in Through the Eyes of a Collector by Nina Hellman (2015).
Provenance: The Thomas Mittler Scrimshaw Collection."
