Mary Ferris Swan (1887-1974) was born in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1912 she married physician Alfred Swan and they lived in Shanghai for 15 years. While her husband practiced medicine, she painted portraits and scenes of China. Political turmoil forced their return to the U.S. in 1930.
