Description

FRAMED PAINTING ON SILK 18th Century
School of Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining). Depicting an imperial hunting dog lying on a brocade cushion. Marked with inscription which states, This portrait of one of the Royal hunting dogs was painted as a humble gift to the Emperor by an official of the court called 'Sung.'" It further states, "Although the little dog who wears the golden bell is small of stature, he is a very good hunter who also protects the Emperor with all his might." Presumably this refers to the character of the humble court official as well. Marked with two seal marks. 12.25" x 25.5". Framed 37.25" x 19". Purchased from Charlotte Horstmann & Gerald Godfrey Ltd., Hong Kong, 1985."
