Description

SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH Mid-19th Century
Multiple pinpoint figural portraits cover almost the entire tooth. Obverse depicts a bust portrait of a woman above an image of a shield containing the California state seal. Shield is topped by a spread-wing eagle grasping a smaller shield and is flanked by draped American flags and full-length portraits of cowboys. Other portraits include a baby standing in a bathtub, a devil, a bearded man in a top hat holding a briefcase, a woman holding her hand to her chin, a bearded man dressed in a vest and suit coat, a seated man, and a profile view of a man's head within a cartouche, identified as Gladstone" in a banner. Signed on edge near tip "Henry Rowlands Jan 1881 Lat 34 N. Long 122 W Ship Parthea[?]". Length 6.75".
