Description

RARE REPUBLICAN WHIG BALLOT LISTING TWO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES Election of 1836
A Viriginia ballot listing Whig candidates Hugh Lawson White and William Henry Harrison for President, together with another Whig ticket from Viriginia, listing just White for President. Both ballots marked The People, Against Official Dictation" and list John Tyler for Vice President as well as numerous electors. Ballot listing two nominees for President also marked "As the vote for the one or the other may prevent an election by the House of Representatives, and secure a choice by the People. ...". Approx. 6.5" x 2.63" and 8.5" x 3.38".
During the election of 1836, the Whig Party ran four candidates in different parts of the country, hoping each would have enough regional popularity to defeat Democratic candidate Martin Van Buren. The strategy backfired and Van Buren won in Virginia and in the national election. We have been unable to find a comparable example listing two Presidential candidates."
