BENJAMIN CHAMPNEY
New Hampshire/Massachusetts, 1817-1907

Coastal inlet and a distant lighthouse. Signed and dated lower right B. Champney 1864".
Benjamin Champney and John F. Kensett were close friends and in their earlier years often painted together. This work clearly shows Kensett's influence on Champney's work.

Condition

UV light reveals minor scattered retouch, mostly around the edges from previous frame rub, and a trace amount in upper sky. Faint horizontal crazing along the top and bottom edges, and small loss to canvas at extreme left corner.
