To Which are Prefixed, the Charter, Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, Constitution of the United States, and President Washington’s Address of September, 1796. Published by Authority. (Providence: Carter and Wilkinson, 1798.) The fifth revision of Rhode Island laws and the first published after the Revolutionary War. Title page also includes the line Ignorantia Legis Neminem Excusat. Ignorance of the Law is No Excuse for its Violation." O. Full calf, possibly original. Cover rubbed, worn and bumped. Text pages toned and foxed, with some loss at edges. Rear hinge cracked. Inscribed on first free endpaper "Samuel Clarke His Book Bought June 10 AD 1800 Price fifteen Shillings Samuel Clarkes Book Richmond price 15 shillings". Possibly a member of the Clarke family who built the Samuel Clarke Farmhouse in Richmond in 1691, which remains one of the earliest surviving structures in Rhode Island."
