RARE AND UNUSUAL SCRIMSHAW WHALEBONE PLAQUE First Half of the 19th Century
Carved whalebone figure of Neptune mounted on an oval piece of whale vertebrae. Neptune holds a trident in his right hand, a cloth in his left hand and is riding a clamshell drawn by two seahorses. Below Neptune is the face of a mythological creature. Overall 12.25 x 10.25".

Condition

Some portions of trident missing. Cloth is broken near Neptune's hand. Some deterioration of clamshell, possibly part of the making or naturally occuring in the bone.
