Description

SMALL WHALE IVORY AND BALEEN PIE CRIMPER, POSSIBLY MADE FOR A CHILD Mid-19th Century
Handle terminal carved in the form of an eagle's head grasping a shell ring in its beak. Red sealing wax used for eagle's eyes. Shaft constructed of a layer of baleen sandwiched between two layers of whale ivory pierced with hearts and eight-pointed stars. Layers fastened together with nonferrous pins. Wheel mount carved in the form of a dove's head with inset eyes. Fluted wheel with openwork pinwheel design. Length 4.5.
