Description

STICK BAROMETER WITH EXCEPTIONAL BARLEY-TWIST MAHOGANY CASE Mid-19th Century
Barometer by James Bassnett, Liverpool. Complete with original gimbal. Height 37.5."

Condition

Very good condition with minor damages/repairs commensurate with age. Mercury tube is intact, but void of mercury. Drained due to shipping issues. There is mercury in the thermometer, but it is sealed and undrainable. Four small chips to top piece, two have been re-glued. Faint age crack to side of top portion of case. Slight separation between glass and wood and where two wood pieces meet (right next to age crack), noted on top portion of case. White dial believed to be bone and may be a later replacement. Repair at bottom of wood noted on one acanthus leaf. Dirt inside thermometer case, possibly spider excrement. Something missing from back, possibly a plate (right above other plate). Not clear what rectangular opening on back is intended for.
