Description

EXCEPTIONAL SCRIMSHAW WATCH HUTCH Mid-19th Century
In the form of a two-story building with balconies. Made from ebony faced with pierced whalebone veneer, adorned with whalebone and whale ivory railings, columns, etc., and raised on a pierced and carved whalebone base. Domed upper tier topped with turned and heart-shaped finials. Circular watch aperture flanked by a cross and an anchor, both raised on turned and engraved columns. Upper balcony supported on similar columns. Lower tier with central figure of a woman, posed as if she is standing in a doorway. Drop-down door at back allows for insertion of watch. Contains a later Waltham pocket watch. Height 10.75.
