Description

SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH SEAFARING MOTIFS Mid-19th Century
Obverse depicts a three-masted ship at sea, flying an American flag from the foremast and a long pennant from the main mast. Above the ship is a spread-wing eagle with an American shield at its breast and arrows and olive branches in its talons. Reverse depicts a woman mourning at a memorial monument marked Albert Gardner Lost at Sea 1840". Monument flanked by a stylized weeping willow. Scenes on both obverse and reverse are surrounded by a barber pole and pique border, one in the form of a proscenium arch and the other in the form of an ogee arch. Scalloped, pique, serrated and crosshatch borders surround circumference of base. Nicely executed, particularly the water, the eagle's feathering, the woman's dress and the landscape surrounding the monument. Length 5"."
