Description

POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH, POSSIBLY BY THE BATTLE ENGRAVER Mid-19th Century
Obverse depicts a battle between two American-flagged ships and two other ships, presumably British, one of which is almost entirely obscured by cannon smoke. The flags are colored red and dark blue, and the water is colored blue-green. Reverse depicts a whaling scene with whaleship, a waifed whale, and three whaleboats, two under sail and one being stoved, sending whalemen and implements into the air. The water is colored the same blue-green as the obverse. One of the whaleboats is sailing toward the viewer, closely resembling this characteristic trait of the Battle Engraver's work. Length 6.25. Includes wood stand.
"

Condition

Small old chip at tip. Base with approx. .5 x .5" chip missing from reverse, as well as typical roughness around circumference. Age crack extends from crack on reverse approx. 1.25", just reaching the edge of the scene. Similar size age crack on obverse."
