Description

SCRIMSHAW WHALEBONE BUSK, POSSIBLY BY THE STAR ENGRAVER Mid-19th Century
Obverse with seven vignettes: an urn with a potted flower, a church in a grove of trees, a foliate design, a patriotic assemblage of a star, crossed flags and an American shield, a potted flowering plant, a tulip plant, and a maritime assemblage of a star, crossed harpoons and an anchor. Vignettes are framed by differing geometric borders. Foliate garlands at lobed top and curved bottom. Reverse with identical maritime assemblage as obverse and similar geometric borders but is otherwise undecorated. Length 14.
The five-pointed stars on this busk, with shaded points and an empty interior, are similar to those seen on examples attributed to the Star Engraver that were sold at Eldred's, July 19, 2013, Lot #623, and July 25, 2019, Lots #113 and #114.
From the Estate of Justin Cobb."
