A World War I veteran, Nelson Coon worked as a groundskeeper, and later as a librarian and museum curator, at the Perkins School for the Blind. He published twelve books and numerous articles on a variety of subjects, including horticulture. In the 1950s Coon and his wife retired to Martha's Vineyard, where he was an active member of the Dukes County Historical Society, serving as the Society’s president from 1964 to 1967. Coon was also a member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the American Horticultural Society, and the Garden Writers Association of America.
