SCRIMSHAW BALEEN DITTY BOX LID Mid-19th Century
Top with well-executed portrait of a three-masted ship flying a large American flag off the stern, a long checkered pennant from the central mast and a smaller flag from the foremast. Interesting checkered depiction of the water. Foliate garland below water and around perimeter. Lip with half-moon, diamond and pique design, and a metal-pinned spade-shaped finger. Baleen top panel secured to an interior wooden support panel with metal pins. Faintly signed on wood panel. Height .75. Length 7.25".

Typical bug deterioration. Top with age crack, approx. 2.5, and triangular area of loss, approx. .5" x .75", exposing wooden support panel."
