Description

SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH WHALING SCENE AND SOUTH SEAS FIGURE Mid-19th Century
Obverse depicts four whaleboats under sail, towing a waifed sperm whale toward a whaleship, while a pod of five whales is visible nearby. Nicely detailed with multiple flags in the whale, visible teeth in its open jaw, six whalemen in each boat, and extensive rigging in the whaleship. One of the whales in the pod has its tail visible, while the others are surfaced. Reverse depicts an elaborately costumed and tattooed native, holding a bludgeon-type item in one hand and a netted bag of coconuts in the other. To the right is a palm tree and in the distant left is a small building surrounded by palm trees. Length 7. Includes a wooden stand."

Condition

Screw for wooden base affixed inside root with a resin. Some residue of this resin on the edge of the base of the tooth, though it appears it can be removed. Tooth is oriented on base vertically. Typical age fissure on reverse, in area of figure's leg. Small age line near tip on reverse. Typical uneven base.
