Description

WHALE IVORY AND BALEEN-BANDED UNICORN PIE CRIMPER 19th Century
A full-bodied running unicorn with pointy ears, inlaid eyes and nostrils, and a fluked tail. Front legs support a thinly carved fluted wheel with five-pointed star. Baleen band with fine pique border. Length 7.25. Includes an acrylic stand marked "The Unicorn Crimper".
Similar examples appear in Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders, Whales and Whalemen by E. Norman Flayderman (New Milford, Ct.: N. Flayderman & Co., Inc., 1972), p. 182-183. A similar but lesser example was sold as part of the Folk Art & Americana Collection of Carl and Sonia Schmitt during Eldred's Marine Sale, July 19, 2018, Lot #131."

Condition

Horn professionally restored. Some pearling, particularly on unicorn's snout and chest.
