Description

RETICULATED WHALE IVORY CRIMPER Mid-19th Century
Handle and shaft with openwork design of diamonds, crosses and opposing hearts, and a carved scroll design along the edges. Shaft constructed of twin pierced panels pinned to the handle. Fluted wheel with remnants of piecrust. Deep rich patina. Length 5.75. Includes a metal stand.
Similar examples, possibly by the same hand, were sold as part of the Kobacker Scrimshaw Collection and the Thomas Mittler Scrimshaw Collection during Eldred's Marine Sales, July 19, 2018, Lot #6 and July 20, 2017, Lot #28.
