Description

NAPOLEONIC PRISONER-OF-WAR BONE MODEL OF A 50-GUN MAN-OF-WAR French/English, Early 19th Century
Hull planked in bone, with contrasting bands, probably baleen, between the gun ports and at the waist and sheer lines. Cut and pierced gun ports fitted with blackened brass cannons and red covers. Detailed with a carved boxwood warrior figurehead, rigging, metal anchors and chains, deck fittings, etc., with some polychrome elements. Displayed on a pair of bone cradles resting on a straw work base. Contemporary glass-domed case with stepped mahogany base. Case height 11.75. Length 15". Width 8.25"."
