Description

POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALEBONE DITTY BOX Mid-19th Century
Lid with a mahogany top and a whalebone lip engraved with vine swags interrupted by pique and double line bands. Box with a pine base and whalebone sides engraved with two tendril bands, a flower-filled cornucopias flanking a pineapple, a cherry bough, a potted flowering plant, and a memorial scene of a woman resting against an urn-topped monument, with a weeping willow and a domed building at her side. Lid and box secured with metal-pinned scalloped fingers. Height 4. Length 9.5".

Condition

Lid with a small crack near pin that attaches lip to top, and a horizontal age line/crack at one corner. One pin attaching lip to top is missing. Box with approx. 2.5 age line/crack, extending from end of finger through potted plant. Very small crack at rim. Other age/stress lines, mostly unobtrusive.
Box is still tight and sturdy.
