American

1882 - 1953

Harold C. Dunbar was born in Brockton, Ma in 1882. As a young man he pursued his interest in fine art by studying with noted Boston artists Ernest Lee Major and Jospeh De Camp at the Masschusetts School of Art, and Edmund Tarbell at the the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Dunbar’s early work was heavily influenced by Tarbell’s impressionist style. He produced a number of masterful impressionist landscapes of the Boston suburbs throughout the early 1900s. Although this earlier work is arguably the finest of his career, it was not until he re-located to Chatham on Cape Cod where he saw popular and commercial success.

Dunbar’s Cape Cod work mostly centers around loose and brightly colored views of seascapes, landmarks, and village scenes primarily in the towns of Chatham and Harwich. Many of these paintings are dated and identified on the reverse of paintings.
