Elizabeth Mumford

Elizabeth Mumford: Elizabeth Mumford's

Elizabeth Mumford's "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Rules the World"

Elizabeth Mumford grew up on a farm in the Midwest but spent every summer on Cape Cod, where she became an avid sailor. Her work, which reflects her love of the sea, old boats and “olden times”, has a distinct whimsical style and often a nautical theme. Each painting is surrounded by her signature black border with a verse, commonly a line of poetry, a sea chantey or a piece of conventional New England wisdom.

Mumford holds degrees in Fine Arts from Smith College and a M.A. in teaching from Tulane University. Although trained in contemporary abstract expressionism, she chose instead to paint what she loved: American Folk Art. She herself says her early work could be considered “primitive”, but it has since evolved into a sophisticated compositional balance of color and line.

Mumford currently lives and works full time from her home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
