Steve Kennedy: Steve Kennedy

Steve Kennedy

Working in the “plein air” tradition, contemporary artist Steve Kennedy calls his style “painterly realism”. He paints in a loose yet representational style; and his flowing brushwork is balanced with highly crafted drawing, especially when he is capturing architectural or marine subjects, two of his favorite themes.

He has lived on Cape Cod for more than 30 years, and he enjoys the challenge of painting outdoors year round. He’s especially interested in the play of light and shadow upon his chosen subjects. “One of my goals is to capture the luminosity of Cape light by working early in the morning or late in the day when color and drama are at their height,” says the artist.

His studio work, which focuses on large-scale architectural elements of places where he has traveled such as Gloucester, New Bedford, the Great Lakes and Atlantic Maritime Canada, allows him to depict fleeting effects not easily capture on location. Influences include the work of Edward Hopper, Frederick J. Mulhaupt, John Carlson and photographer David Plowden. His work is in many public and private collections, including the permanent collection of the Cape Cod Museum of Art. He has won various awards for his work at art associations in the New England and New York areas, and he has taught painting in Provincetown for many years.
