Aleta Steward: Aleta Steward

Aleta Steward "Mr. Bob"

Many childhood trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium awakened in Aleta Steward an early interest in both art and science. Steward was able to combine both these interests into a career specializing in wildlife and animal paintings.

Steward grew up on Long Island, studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan, and then spent many years in northern and southern California before relocating to Cape Cod in 1987, where she quickly discovered a whole new world of coastal habitat to paint. Her portrayals of shorebirds sand songbirds soon garnered widespread attention, including major awards and national juried exhibitions. She has been featured in many newspaper and magazine articles, and she was recently admitted to the renowned and exclusive Society of Animal Artists.

Steward has increasingly tended to defocus and partially abstract her backgrounds in order to suggest intricate habitats, while still maintaining a sharp focus on the subject matter. Her lively paintings go beyond what most artists attempt in these subjects. There is a spark of life in her paintings, in the tilt of a head, the ruffle of a feather, or the potential of quick flight, that demonstrate her lifetime of knowledge of the natural world.
