1849 - 1916

One of the most famous American artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chase is an icon not only for his paintings, but also for his influence and guidance as an educator.

A native of Indiana, Chase received his earliest training in St. Louis and then in Europe. He would eventually end up in New York which would remain his home base for the remainder of his life. While in New York he produced countless impressionist views of Central Park and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.  Some of his most famous landscape work was produced in Long Island’s Shinnecock Hills where he ran a summer school for over a decade.

Part of Chase’s influence was that he refused to be defined by a single style, while he is most famous for his impressionist works; he also produced paintings that were more tonalist and realist in nature. He varied his subject matter greatly as well. In addition to his landscapes he painted wonderful Japanese inspired portraits as well as rich still lifes.
