William Trost Richards is regarded by many scholars and collectors as the finest 19th century American seascape painter. A true innovator in the genre, Richard’s seascapes combine aspects of the Hudson River School’s strict adherence to nature, with dramatic effect borrowed from the Pre-Raphaelites. While his subjects ranged from the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the British seaside, it is his Rhode Island coastal scenes that are the most iconic.
