David Maass: Ruffed grouse in flight by David Maass

Ruffed grouse in flight by David Maass

1929 - present

The alluring images of waterfowl and game birds David Maass paints are considered some of the finest in the genre. Maass, a primarily self-taught artist, has spent nearly his entire life in Minnesota. He grew up with a family tradition of hunting (his mother was a state trap-shooting champion), but as a young boy Maass also raised pigeons and rescued injured birds. His work, mostly oils, exhibits both a meticulous examination of his subjects and an immense appreciation for the grandness of the outdoors.

A strong advocate for wildlife conservation, Maass was chosen Artist of the Year by Ducks Unlimited and a number of other conservation organizations throughout his 50-year long career. He is also represented in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota.
