Bidding Procedures

If you are unable to attending an auction in person, there are other methods of bidding.

  1. Absentee Bidding: After reading our Conditions of Sale and Advice to Bidders, you may contact us to place an absentee bid (please see advice below).
  2. Phone Bidding: We offer phone bidding, however we have a limited number of staff and phone lines to accommodate customers. Please contact our office well before the auction to schedule a phone bid, as we require new customers to send a deposit check prior to the sale.
  3. Artfact Live! Auctions: We post all of our auctions to Artfact Live!. You need to register via Artfact Live! and be approved to bid in one of our Artfact Live! auctions. Please note there is a 25% Buyer's Premium when using Artfact Live!, rather than our standard 20%. (28% and 23% for The Nantucket Auction)


Absentee Bidding and Telephone Bidding

If you are unable to attend a sale, and if, after reading our Conditions of Sale you would like to have us bid for you on any item or items, it can be handled in the following manner:


  1. Please list the item number on the form below with the name or title of the article(s) and the highest amount you are willing to pay. Carefully check your Absentee Bid Form. Although we do attempt to check the description against the item number, bids are posted by the number.
  2. Bidders who have not successfully bid with us must establish credit prior to placing a bid. A deposit of 10% of the total order is required. This sum will be held by us until after the auction. An alternative is to submit a completed Bidder Pre-Registration Form, or to provide us with a letter of credit from your bank. Eldred's will not accept credit cards for deposits or purchases.
  3. All bidders must sign our Conditions of Sale Bidder Agreement Form, and either mail or fax it to us.
  4. All absentee bids should be submitted in a timely manner to reduce the chance of posting error. All mail, phone, or fax bids should be received prior to the day of the sale. In the event of identical bids, the earliest received will take precedence.
    All absentee bids are kept in strict confidence.
  5. On the day of the auction, a member of our staff will act as your agent and bid for you, and will attempt to obtain the lot or lots for you for the lowest possible amount. If you have indicated the highest amount you are willing to pay, you should not be disappointed if you lose an item. Many times you will actually buy it for less than your bid.
  6. At the end of the auction, you will be notified. If successful, the amount of your deposit will be applied toward the purchase price. If unsuccessful, the full amount of your deposit will be returned promptly.
  7. A premium of 20% will be added to the hammer price to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. *23% for Nantucket
  8. Eldred's shall not be held responsible for errors or failure to execute bids. Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc. offers this service as a convenience to its clients and will not be held responsible for errors or failure to execute bids.
  9. All sales are subject to the Conditions of Sale printed in the catalog.
  10. Bidders holding a valid Massachusetts or out-of-state resale number must provide their certificate or a copy thereof when registering, or they will be required to pay 6.25% Massachusetts's sales tax on purchases. A Sales Tax Resale Certificate form must also be completed.
