Keene, NH, 1839-1864

Pair of primitive portraits of brothers Samuel and Levi Lewin of Keene, New Hampshire. Each wearing spectacles, black coat with white stock, and with his left hand tucked behind his lapel. One sits in a yellow Windsor chair. The Lewin brothers came from Boston about 1827-1828 and opened a dry goods store on Washington and Mechanics Street. Samuel married and his grandchildren married into several of the town's prominent families. The portraits may be the work of Joseph Wheeler, who had a shop for sign and ornamental painting along with Charles Ingalls, over Jennings & Perkins carriage manufactory on Washington and Mechanic Street in 1830 (see p. 413 History of Keene, NH). The newspapers The Farmer's Museum and Cheshire Republican carried their ads. Joseph Wheeler is listed in the Little & Winchester check list of American Primitive Painters in their book on American Primitive Painting.
