Description

WILLIAM MATTHEW PRIOR
American, 1806-1873

Portrait of Capt. John J. Sullivan, a Boston Pilot. Signed and dated on reverse of canvas Capt. John J. Sullivan a Boston Pilot in 18... Died in Panama 1848. Painted by Wm. M. Prior, East Boston, Trenton Street N...from a Daguerreotype and partly from a portrait I .... in 1844, with a sketch of a Capt. Sullivan below the writing, all dated 1854.
Accompanied by a letter dated September 18, 1975 from an Associate Curator at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection, Williamsburg, VA. As this painting is from a daguerreotype, he asks the Silversteins if he may include a slide of this portrait in his lecture on Prior in October 1975 to see what effect, if any, photography had on Prior's style and composition. In return, he offers to show the Silversteins four more signed Powers and Rice portraits of Griswold family members, which have found in storage at the Smithsonian's Museum of History and Technology.
Oil on canvas, 27 x 22. Framed.
