Description

IMPORTANT ENGLISH SILVER PRESENTATION PUNCH BOWL With maker's mark of Makepeace and Batty, Newcastle, 1719. Inscribed "A Gift to the Owners of the Rotterdam Merchant to Capt. John Clerk, 1719". Below inscription is an engraved portrait of an English ship and numerous lines of later family inscriptions showing the provenance of the bowl. Descended to a William Metcalf of Dockway Square, the great grandson of Captain Clerk. The last inscription places it with John B. Dale of South Shields in 1882, the maternal grandson of Metcalf. Reverse with two engraved coats of arms. Double band at rim. Lion's head and bail handles. Stepped circular foot. A punch bowl made by Makepeace and Barry is mentioned in Jackson's English Goldsmiths and Their Marks. Height 6". Diameter 11". 46.5 troy oz.
