Description

FRAMED PAINTING "On the Androscoggin Bethel Maine", depicting a landscape with two cows at water's edge. Titled on reverse. Signed lower left "F.A. Butman". Frederick A. Butman (Maine, 1820-1871). Original frame. Oil on artist board, 6" x 8".

Condition

The trees in the background floresce entierely , as do the sprigs of green grasses around the rocks . It is of our impression that there may have been a coat selective varnish applied before these two areas were applied, as they do appear to "lift" from the image as a form of an optical illusion. There is a light diagonal scratch starting at the top left corner and extending downwards about 3" and slight blemish to canvas (dirt?) above red tree.
