Description

FRAMED HANDCOLORED ENGRAVING 1769-1774 "Storming of the Camp at Garden-Ola," from "The Conquests of the Emperor Qianlong." Drawn by Castiglione and engraved by J. Ph. Le Bas, 1769. Printed lower left "Joseph Castilhoni Soc Jesu delin 1765." From a set of sixteen engravings commemorating the Emperor's military victories from 1755 to 1760. The Emperor Qianlong commissioned the original set of sixteen engravings of his conquests on July 13, 1765 for the central hall of the Palace of Beijing. The commission was for an edition of 100 copies in China, but an edition of 200 copies was actually printed to ensure the safe receipt of at least 100 copies in China. They were distributed on two ships in lots of 100 impressions each, then returned to China in three shipments. This was done to reduce the risk of loss at sea. By 1775 the whole edition was received in China. The set of engravings are documented in a monograph by Michel Pirazzoli-t'Serstevens, Gravures des Conquetes de l'Empereur de Chine K'ien-long au Musee Guimet, 1969. Image size 35" x 20". Some spotting, mostly in sky.
