(JOURNAL/LOG - AMERICAN CLIPPER SHIP) Master’s Journal for the first voyage of the clipper ship Surpise , of 1,261 tons, of New York, A.A. Low & Bro., Agents. Built by Samuel Hall in Boston. Philips Dumaresq, master. Kept on the voyage from New York to San Francisco, Hong Kong and London. Daily entries from Dec 13, 1850 to Nov. 11, 1851. 251 pages. The passage of the Surprise from New York to San Francisco in 96 days and 15 hours was a new record which beat the Sea Witch’s time. The captain notes in the journal on his arrival “Shortest passage on record.” Dumaresq was known as “The Prince of Captains.” The journal lacks only the 42 days journey from London to New York. The journal is kept in considerable detail. O. ½ black calf with marbled boards. Modern half brown calf slipcase with gilt lettering.
