FRAMED CHINA TRADE PAINTING Circa 1862 "Ship Empress D.R. Lecrew Entering Hong Kong by Lgemoon Passage 1862". Black hull vessel shown under full sail from the windward side. Vessel flies the American flag off the gaff and her house flag from the top of the main mast. The name "Empress" is painted in red on the bow and stern quarterboards. Indistinctly signed lower right. Chinese Chippendale-style frame appears to be original. Oil on canvas, 28" x 39". Overall including frame 33" x 45". Reference: Crossman, Carl L., The Decorative Arts of the China Trade", p. 145.
