  • Provenance: Notes:
Julius Randolph Doering was born in 1914 in Goodrich, North Dakota. Starting in his early teens, he developed a life-long interest in woodworking. While he was self-taught, he read widely on the subjects of furniture construction and carving, or whittling, as he called it. After he moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 1955 he set up a complete woodworking shop in his basement, where he made dolls, toys and other household goods and taught his four daughters how to distinguish different kinds of wood by their smell.

After his retirement he moved to San Diego and began carving in earnest, including decoys, figural sculptures, platters and other items. Notably, he glued different colored woods into one solid block so that when the piece was turned on the lathe, it would have three distinctive colors. His work is usually dated and signed "by Julius" or with some combination of his initials JRD.
  • Dimensions: Heights from 2" to 16".
