COLONIAL AMERICAN SILVER TANKARD Probably New York, Early 18th Century
Molded flat cover with serrated front rim. Double-scroll thumbpiece and hinged drop. S-scroll handle with elaborate cartouche-form terminal. Tapering cylindrical body on a molded foot. Illegible and significantly rubbed maker's mark on handle. Body monogrammed "HC". Underside later inscribed "Old Dutch Tankard, said to have been in Cruger family over 200 years, into which Nicholas Cruger was placed on his birth in 1743, and used as a Communion Cup in Church at Saratoga in 1820. Given by Gerald Walton to his Cousin M.O. Rhinelander. Jan. 12th '96. Exhibited by the Colonial Dames in their Ecclesiastical Exhibition of silver at the Metropolitan Museum Season of 1912." Height 7.25".

Nicholas Cruger (1743-1800) was a prosperous New York City merchant from a prominent political family. Around 1767 he moved to St. Croix, where he employed and mentored the young Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton's papers contain extensive extant correspondence between the two. Cruger generously supported the colonial cause during the Revolutionary War.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibited early New York, New Jersey and Southern church silver from November 6 to December 31, 1911. This tankard, lent by Mrs. William Rhinelander, is number 111 in the catalog. Number 141 in the same catalog is an English urn with an inscription pertaining to Nicholas Cruger's brother, Henry, lent by Mrs. T.J. Oakley Rhinelander.

Condition: Extensive restorations: repairs at both ends; of handle where it meets the body, on handle under hinge, where hinge and thumb piece join cover, interior rim of cover (may be entirely replaced), hinge itself, solder marks around foot. Surface worn, with numerous abrasions and shallow dents. Handle dented where thumb piece hits it.

If you plan to pick up your purchases, please call ahead and we'll make every effort to have your items ready. Our physical address is 1483 Route 6A, East Dennis, MA. Pick up of smaller items at our Mystic, CT location is also available with advance notice.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide shipping quotes until the invoice had been paid in full.
In house shipping is offered exclusively though UPS. All items are shipped with UPS insurance (max. $50,000). UPS insurance is billed at $2.70 for the first $100 and at $0.90 per hundred afterwards. Eldred's charges a minium $15 handling fee per package plus actual UPS shipping charges.
COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
