EXCEPTIONALLY RARE TIFFANY & CO. STERLING SILVER PUZZLE GAME
Made for Thomas W. Lawson for guests on his yacht Dreamer. Shaped base surmounted by a seated bear dressed as a sailor wearing a sailor's cap and holding a rope while seated on a piling. Rope extends from piling and coils around three poles, onto which disc-form game pieces are placed. (Game pieces missing. Third post is present but broken off and needs to be re-soldered.) Enamel burgee comprised of a white bear on a blue block centered on a white ground, Lawson's private signal, applied to front of base. Two compasses flank burgee. Engraved along left edge "On Board the Dreamer". Single shallow drawer at front. Engraved inscription on bottom: "This is designed by and made for Thomas W. Lawson for his guests on the 'Dreamer'. The puzzle is, first place the discs on one rope's end the smaller always on the larger, then remove the pyramid to either of the other rope's ends, one disc at a time without ever putting a larger on a smaller. It requires at least four hundred and eighty-four moves to accomplish this." Tiffany datemark for 1892-1902 also on bottom. Height 3.5". Length 5.63".
Note: This game is modeled after the "Tower of Hanoi" mathematical puzzle, invented by French mathematician Edouard Lucas in 1893. We believe this is only the third such game made for Thomas Lawson to come up in a public auction.
Businessman and author Thomas William Lawson, known as Boston's "Copper King", was born just outside the city in 1857. He ran away from home as a teenager to become a bank clerk and speculate in stocks, particularly in the copper mining market. He amassed a $10 million fortune by age 30, and in 1899 he formed Amalgamated Copper Mining Company with Henry H. Rogers and William Rockefeller. He launched the 175-foot yacht Dreamer, noted for its luxurious appointments, in 1900.

The
Thomas W. Lawson, the only seven-masted schooner ever built, was named after him. Lawson, who had invested heavily in the ship that was used primarily to haul coal and oil along the East Coast, lost a huge fortune when it wrecked in 1907. Earning and losing several fortunes throughout his lifetime, Lawson died penniless in 1925.
