By Samuel Walters English, 1811-1882 "The S.S. City of New York II". Shown leaving Liverpool for New York. St. Mary's Parish Church is in the background. Oil on canvas. 19" x 34". Relined. "City of New York" was built by Todd & McGregor, Glasgow, Scotland, in 1865, and owned by the Inman Line. She was 321" long and weighted 2642 tons. She was lengthened to 375" in 1865, and sold to the Allan Line in 1883, and renamed "Norwegian". Wrecked in 1902. Although this painting is not signed, it is fully authenticated by a photo taken by Walters himself in the Liverpool Library. It is illustrated in Davidson, A.S., "Marine Art and Liverpool", Wolverhampton, England 1986. It is also illustrated in color in an article by the same author in "Antique Collector", May 1988.
