FREDERICK CHARLES SHRADY
American, 1907-1990

Peter, Fisher of Men, depicting Peter casting out his net. Signed on base "F. Shrady - 62".
Frederick Charles Shrady is the son of sculptor Henry Merwin Shrady, best known for his sculpture of Ulysses S. Grant that stands outside the Capitol. Frederick Shrady studied painting at the Arts Students' League in New York City and at Oxford University in England before moving to Paris in 1931. He achieved a good deal of success there before returning to the United States in 1940.
During World War II Shrady was a member of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Commission (the Allied "Monuments Men"), helping to retrieve looted art. He was part of the discovery of a large Nazi repository of stolen works at a salt mine in Altaussee, Austria.
Following the war he converted to Catholicism and began painting religious subjects, then, eventually, turned to sculpture, for which he is now most known. In 1982 he received a commission by Pope John Paul II to create a statue of Our Lady of Fatima for the Vatican Gardens, the first American to receive a papal commission. He was also awarded the French Legion of Honor.
A 28-foot version of the sculpture seen here stands in Saint Peter's Garden at Fordham University in New York City.

Bronze, height 22" including wooden stand.
