IMPORTANT AMERICAN SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH Second Quarter of the 19th Century
Obverse depicts a bust portrait of American rear admiral Charles Stewart in dress uniform. "Charles Stewart Esq.r" in geometric cartouche at his waist. Rear Admiral Charles Stewart (1778-1869) served in the U.S. Navy for 63 years, and his long and distinguished career included commanding the USS Constitution during the War of 1812.

Stewart, born in Philadelphia, went to sea as a cabin boy at age 13. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in March 1798 and served aboard the frigate USS
United States during the Quasi-War with France. In July 1800 he assumed command of the USS Experiment , which captured two armed French vessels, recaptured several American ships, secured the release of an American impressed on a British warship and rescued passengers off a vessel in distress near Saona Island.

He briefly commanded the USS
Chesapeake in 1801 and served aboard the USS Constellation in 1802 before taking command of the USS Syren on a voyage to the Mediterranean during the first Barbary War. He participated in the destruction of the USS Philadelphia after her capture and helped maintain the blockade at Tripoli. He was promoted to captain in 1806, a rank he would hold for more than 50 years.

During the War of 1812 Stewart commanded the USS
Argus , Hornet and Constellation before taking command of the USS Constitution in 1813. Under his command, the Constitution captured both the HMS Cyane and Levant on February 20, 1815; capturing two warships with just a single ship of his own made Stewart a national hero.

In the later parts of his career, Stewart served in the West Indies and commanded American squadrons in the Mediterranean and the Pacific. He also served as Naval Commissioner and commander of the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Upon the death of Captain James Barron in 1851, Stewart became the most senior ranking officer in the Navy. Congress named Stewart "senior flag officer" in 1859, a rank created for him in recognition of his meritorious career. He retired in December 1861 at age 83 as the oldest officer on active duty in the history of the U.S. Navy. He received a post-retirement promotion to Rear Admiral in 1862.
