  • Provenance: Note:
Aletha Macy (1901-1971) was born on Nantucket and was a direct descendant of Thomas Macy, one of the original founders of the island community. Her talents emerged as a child and she apprenticed with cabinet and clockmaker Lincoln Creeley for thirty years, starting in high school.
In the mid-1950s she began carving ivory pieces to go on the tops of José Reyes and Stephen Gibbs Nantucket basket purses. Ivory grew to be her preferred medium, and her scrimshaw and carvings became a popular tourist souvenir, notably her "whale boards", which were a collection of carved whales mounted to a backboard.
